What is Bowen Technique?
This is a very gentle and non-invasive technique in which the Therapist performs a series of gentle moves (a rolling action over tendons or muscles) over the body. These moves access the healing ability that each and every one of us has inside our bodies. Treating the body holistically unblocks whatever is stopping the body from healing, thereby embracing not just the presenting symptoms, but also the physical, chemical, emotional and mental aspects of each person receiving the treatment.
There are frequent important pauses between these moves, which give the body time to benefit from each set.
By combining moves, the practitioner is able to address the body as a whole and target a specific problem.
How can Bowen Therapy help you?
In its essence, a Bowen Treatment resets the body to heal itself, accessing the power which each and everyone of us has – the ability to heal ourselves. It can help everyone from a new-born infant through to the elderly.
It is a powerful and dynamic tool for treating ailments, accidents and sports injuries, particularly in improving the rehabilitation time.
Chronically-ill patients benefit as well as the disabled.
The Bowen Technique makes a positive health impact by providing more energy and an overall sense of well-being, hence many people with good health enjoy regular treatments to maintain optimal body balance.
What does a treatment consist of?
The majority of Bowen moves are performed whilst lying on a couch, although this can be adapted whenever necessary. Most of the moves can be performed through a layer of thin clothing.
Bowen consists of a series of moves of a gentle rolling action over connective tissue. There are frequent important pauses between these moves, which give the body time to benefit from each set. By combining moves, the practitioner is able to address the body as a whole or target a specific problem. Either way, the body is involved as a whole unit, embracing not just the presenting symptoms, but also the physical, chemical, emotional and mental aspects of each person receiving the treatment.
The Bowen Technique balances and stimulates energy flows, resulting in a deep sense of overall relaxation. The restorative process begins once the body is relaxed, and continues as the body allows. Healing seems to occur by affecting the body’s autonomic nervous system, which creates homeostasis at a cellular level.
Where has it originated from?
Thomas A. Bowen (1903-1982) developed this technique in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. After serving in World War II, Bowen became interested in ways to alleviate human suffering. He began to notice that when he made certain moves on the body, it had particular effects. Over a period of several years, he developed the system as it is used today.
Mind Body Bowen
In my practise I also use the Bowen moves to access memories stored at an unconscious level. By freeing these memories, this enables your body to heal at a deeper level, allowing you to achieve your full physical and emotional potential in life.
On average, clients are seen once a week – for 1 hour, many clients need only two or three appointments.
